Specials

Second grade will be attending specials from 2:05pm to 2:47pm daily.  If it will be helpful your child can leave an extra pair of gym shoes at school so that he/she can participate on gym day.

Take-Home Folder

Each child will be assigned Take Home Folder.  This folder will transport papers to and from school daily.  Your child's weekly homework assignments and behavior chart will also be in the front of this folder. One column will have assignments in it and the other will need to be signed by you.  Inside the folder, there will be a pocket for papers that need to return to school (nightly homework, permission slips, etc.) and a pocket for papers that can be taken out (graded assignments, notes, etc.). Please clean out your child's folder and book bag nightly.  Students will be responsible for packing their folders so please double check that papers are coming back to school if needed.  Anything that you are sending to school with your child should be placed in this folder (lunch money, homework, notes, etc.)

Weekly Newsletter

I will include a weekly newsletter each Friday.  Please make sure you read this to stay informed on what we are learning about each week and upcoming dates and information!

Water

Students may also bring a water bottle to school, especially on warm days.  Please make sure that the water bottle does not leak and can be closed tightly to avoid spills.  Please make sure that snacks and water bottles are clearly labeled with your child's name.

Birthdays

Students may bring in a small finger food birthday treat on the school day closest to their birthday or 1/2 birthday. Please be sure to send in napkins and any other paper products needed along with the snack.  Children will not be allowed to pass out birthday invitations at school unless everyone in the class is invited.  This will save hurt feelings.  Please refer to the Liberty Center directory for addresses of students.

Lunch Money

Please make sure that any lunch money sent to school is in an envelope or baggie and marked with your child's first and last name, what the money is for, and the amount.  All of the money is sent to the office in a class envelope, and unmarked money will not be credited to your child's account.

Scholastic Book Clubs

During the year I will be sending book orders for Scholastic Books.  Please do not feel obligated to purchase.  If you decide to place an order, please send the completed order and payment back to school by the due date written on the top of the order form.  Make checks payable to "Scholastic Book Clubs."  I will also send home instructions about how to order online.  Every online parent order earns book coupons for our classroom!

Homework

There will be a short homework assignment four days a week. My goal is to not have homework take more than 30 min. a night. If it is taking longer, please contact me and we can work something out!  I want homework to be a chance for you to work with your child at home on something we did in school, a chance for 1 on 1 review, and a chance for your child to learn the responsibility of taking materials home and back.

There will be a white homework slip that comes home with your child daily in the front of their Take Home Folder so you can see what the HW is and initial the slip.

On Mondays, students will do an activity to support the phonics skill we are working on in the classroom (which they will be tested on Friday).   Rocket Math (a Math facts time test for 1 minute- do top part only). They will also bring a bag book (book from their level) home to read. All of these homework items will need to be returned to school on Tuesday.

On Tuesdays, Please practice the Rocket Math, and your child will complete a Reading Response Sheet.  Students will be answering a comprehension question relating to their individual bagged book or the whole group basal reading book that contains the story we are reading that week.

On Wednesdays, students are to read their leveled bag book, complete Rocket Math and after the first quarter of school complete a Free Write Journal which I will respond to weekly as well.

On Thursdays, students will bring home a Math worksheet, which has proficiency-like problems on it or similar problems from class that we are working on.  This is not for a grade. Read in their leveled bagged book.  Please also study for the Red Words which will be tested on Friday and practice the Rocket Math time test for 1 minute.

*There will be no homework on Fridays, except to read the newsletter, which I will send home each week in your child’s Take Home Folder.
