Phonics:
We will start the year with some phonics assessments to determine what phonics skills to review from previous years. We will also use these assessments to decide where to start with our second grade phonics instruction.
Like in first grade, we will continue learning and assessing phonics skills at school. We will also use RED words to memorize words that do not follow phonics patterns.
Reading:
We will start off the year reading Dr. Suess books. Students will fill out interest inventories to help me learn more about each student and their reading preferences.
We will be taking the STAR assessment to determine each child's reading level to help them grow as a reader.
Next, we will be reading a variety of books in the Clifford the Big Red Dog series.
Writing:
We will start off the year with basic structures of a sentence including naming and telling part. We will focus on capitalization and punctuation in our sentence writing as well.
